CRE Roundup: Retail right-sizing means moves

Posted on July 17, 2013

As the economy turns around, more retailers are re-examining their long-term goals, leading to “right-sizing” and relocations, Outlet Shops of Grand RiverGeneral Manager Christine Szalay told me recently.

For a story in our print edition this week about OSGR getting a J. Crew Factory, Old Navy and Wet Seal, Szalay told me that she’s noticed a trend. More retailers are spending more time looking at their existing locations and deciding whether they want to upgrade their commercial real estate.

“In Birmingham, the one thing I’ve noticed over the last year: I think in some ways, this market is going through a period of right-sizing,” she said.

A good example of that is Old Navy, which is relocating stores in Trussville and Homewood, as I reported today.
