The University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers was ranked No. 1 hospital in Southeast Michigan in the 2014 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals list.

Of the 67 hospitals surveyed in Southeast Michigan, which includes Flint, 25 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. Only 147 hospitals of about 4,800 nationally were ranked in one specialty.

Ranked No. 2 in Southeast Michigan was Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, followed by Detroit Medical Center’s Harper University Hospital; Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit; Beaumont Hospital, Troy; andOakwood Hospital & Medical Center, Dearborn.

Rounding out the top 10 are DMC’s Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, Commerce Township; DMC’s Sinai-Grace Hospital, Detroit; Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital; and St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor Hospital.

“All of us involved in patient care at UM take pride in this broad range of national accolades, which together signal our devotion to excellence and our commitment to constant improvement,” said Doug Strong, CEO of UM Hospitals, in a statement.

Detroit also was recognized as the No. 4 metropolitan market with the highest number of best hospitals. New York, Chicago and Los Angeles were ranked ahead of Detroit.

According to U.S. News: “Despite its image as an economically down-and-out city, Detroit has much to offer if you’re in need of serious medical care.”

For example, UM Hospitals ranked in 12 specialties; Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak was recognized in seven specialties and Harper University Hospital was ranked in three specialties.

“Our physicians, nurses, other caregivers, our board and management team are strongly focused on providing high quality-high value care to achieve the best outcomes for patients,” said David Wood, M.D., Beaumont’s chief medical officer, in a statement.

Four of DMC’s seven adult hospitals were recognized by U.S. News as best hospitals. The fourth DMC hospital was Detroit Receiving Hospital. DMC’s Children’s Hospital of Michigan was also ranked as a best children’s hospital.

“These rankings exemplify the depth of the quality and specialty care that patients receive every day at our hospitals, which would not be possible without our world-class team of physicians and clinical staff,” said DMC’s CEO Joe Mullany, in a statement.

In Michigan, Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids and Munson Medical Center in Traverse City were recognized as top hospitals.

U.S. News determines the “America’s Best Hospitals” rankings based on hospital reputation in particular specialties, mortality rates in 12 specialties and a mix of care-related factors, such as nursing and patient services.

Rankings in ophthalmology, psychiatry, rehabilitation and rheumatology are chosen by reputation among board-certified specialists.

Patient satisfaction scores are not part of the data used in the rankings.
