Ice cream delivery through press of a smartphone button comes to Detroit Friday

DETROIT, MI – A promotional stunt by a car-for-hire start-up company could not have come at a more opportune time.

As the mercury continues to rise above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, Uber, a mobile app-driven limo service that launched in Detroit last March, is for one day only offering ice cream on demand Friday.

According to the Associated Press, the San Francisco-based company will have a network of ice-cream trucks in the 35 cities where it now operates, including the Motor City, which is now in the thralls of an oppressive heat wave.

Those who want the ice cream delivered to them have to order more than one cone, and depending on the city, six ice creams will cost from $20 to $35, according to the Associated Press. The trucks will be delivering ice cream for Uber from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time.

Uber was founded in 2010 by Travis Kalanick, a Silicon Valley investor and start-up specialist. It launched in Detroit just in time for Opening Day of the Detroit Tigers’ 2013 season.
